How Holoportation Works
The general term for holoportation would be virtual teleportation using VR and AR. Holoportation is a 3D capture technology that uses a slew of 3D cameras placed at different points of view (POV) to capture and reconstruct a 3D render of a person, compress it and transfer it to a far-off location in real time. It uses HoloLens from Microsoft, giving the user the ability to see, listen and interact with other participants using HoloLens in a VR environment without living in the same physical space. It can be summed up as a 3D equivalent of video conferencing, where instead of users visible on the computer screen, they are right in front of you in a 3D holographic view.
Future Of Holoportation And VR In The Workplace
Skype, Webex, Teams and Zoom are all great video conferencing tools, but they lack the age-old human behavior of working together side-by-side. Holoportation, on the other hand, utilizes the latest technology while complying with the remote work culture that has popped up from a couple of years and combines them into one. This is where you can actually work together with your colleagues, attend events and more, and that too from the comfort of your home.
The Ability To See and Interact With Others In-person
Unlike in a Zoom video conference, you will be actually communicating with your colleague, client or other members of your office in real time and their 3D holograms in a VR world. Holoportation virtually teleports you to a location far off, all while you sit back and control your 3D render in a physical space in real time. The technology aids in listening, seeing, and even interacting with other users and objects in a virtual world.
It uses at least two specialized 3D cameras with different POVs to create 3D renders. Adding more cameras to the contraption will eventually make the 3D renders way better. A specialized software reconstructs the subject and transmits them to the other part of the world (towards the recipient) to hold a meeting while sitting inside a single room, even when they are far off in reality. Holoportation uses Microsoft HoloLens 2.0 to instill the ability to see, hear and interact with the subject in a VR environment and it is untethered, unlike previous iterations.
As AI has evolved over the years, it can be a great asset and a workmate, helping users do their daily tasks efficiently. It includes the translation of foreign languages, emotion tracking and assistance and more. AI can also aid in scheduling, a reminder of tasks to do, make up calculations and almost everything and more that AIs can do today.
Open Channel for Communication and Collaboration
Holoportation can be used for meetings and brainstorming sessions while users live in separate parts of a city or even a country. As more tools are being developed, users can actually draw, annotate and innovate in a mixed reality environment using HoloLens 2.0, such as customizing a room where each object complies with real world-based physics. During a meeting, you won’t ever need that whiteboard because you can pull up charts, text and more using the built-in features and apps.
Microsoft isn’t alone in this ever-evolving technology, though. PORTAL, a tech and entertainment company, launched HOLOPORTL, although it doesn’t use a VR lens as you have to have the Holoportation technology installed and works in real time.
